Turning Service On/Off Service Start-up, Stop and Transfers One call is all it takes to turn our water service on or off or transfer your service if your home or business is already connected to our system. Simply contact our Customer Service Center at 1.866.641.2108. Our representatives are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They can take a service application by phone from the person responsible for paying the bill. New Residence If you are moving into a new home or non-residential building, make sure that water is available at your address. Then your can call our Customer Service Center to schedule an appointment to install your water meter and turn on the water. Existing Residence If you move to a residence where water service is already available, call our Customer Service Center and we will make a service call to read the meter and start your billing with an actual meter reading. If your water meter is located inside your home, it will be necessary for a representative to enter your home to read the meter. Please call us at least three working days before you want your water service started. An adult should be present when we turn on your water service, to prevent any overflow in case a faucet or other water device has been accidentally left on inside. An adult will also need to be present if your water service is already on, but we need to take a first reading from a meter located in the basement. Turning Your Water Off Please notify us at least three working days before you want your water service disconnected. This advance notice allows us time to take a final meter reading and ensure that you are only charged for the water you use Deposits Most of our customers are not required to make a security deposit for new water service. There are exceptions. If you owe money to Iowa American Water for prior service, or if you have an unsatisfactory payment record within the past two years, you may be required to make a security deposit. Any deposit will not exceed 1/6 of your estimated annual billing. If the deposit is more than $70, you may pay it in equal installments over an eight-week period. Deposits will be refunded when a satisfactory payment record is maintained for one year.
Turning the Water On To begin service at your new home or to restore seasonal service, call the Customer Service Center. Please have your service address, billing address, and telephone number handy. For a residence that has never had water service, we will install a meter and turn on the water. Someone should be home at the time of the meter installation to prevent any overflow in case a faucet or other water device has been accidentally left on inside. For a residence where water is already being provided, you want to be sure that you are only charged for the water you use. We will visit your residence to read the meter and start your billing with an actual reading. This also applies for most seasonal accounts. If you were not previously an American Water customer, a deposit may be required until you have established a satisfactory credit history. Turning the Water Off To stop service when you are moving, or to shut off seasonal service, please call the Customer Service Center. Make sure to allow a few days before you want service stopped. This will enable us to take a final and accurate meter reading and ensure that you are only charged for water used. Be ready to tell us the date service should be stopped, to arrange for a final meter reading, and to provide us with your final billing address. And don’t forget to have your service address, billing address, and telephone number handy.
